With the support of a grant from Port Macquarie-Hastings Council we successfully ran a series of drama workshops for clients, producing two Christmas community performances of ‘Who Pushed the Fairy Off the Christmas Tree’. It was followed by further workshops and community performance of a pantomime ‘Dorothy Meets Robin Hood and his Merry Mates’ at Port Panthers in Port Macquarie.
The workshops were used to develop the outline for each performance and each client who took part received one-on-one support for their role.
Much of the script was based on stories and songs from the clients’ earlier memories and certainly confirmed research that long-term memory remains intact the longest.
Following on from our successful project, ‘Raising the Curtain on Theatre for Memories’ we’ve introduced our Arts and Theatre program.
Designed to be both educational and recreational, the program runs from 8.30am-4pm each Wednesday at our Morton Centre. In the morning, clients enjoy singing, dancing and acting under the guidance of drama tutor, Greta Warner, to produce a community performance based on the interests of the group members.
We’ve produced our own silent movie, ‘The Perils of Paula’ which premiered at the Short Film Festival during Port Macquarie’s Seniors Week (2015). The group also celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Anzac Day with a performance for carers.
On Wednesday afternoons, group members are encouraged to unleash their inner artist and enjoy all forms of creative arts and social interaction with friends.
